safari-iconApple released macOS Sierra today with Safari 10 preinstalled, but Mac users still running the latest versions of OS X El Capitan or OS X Yosemite can now download the all-new version of the web browser too from the Mac App Store.

Safari 10 for OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan does not include all of the new features available in macOS Sierra, like Apple Pay on the web and picture-in-picture support for videos, but the update includes the following new functions:

  • Safari Extensions such as 1Password, Save to Pocket, and DuckDuckGo
  • New Bookmarks sidebar, including double-click to focus in on a folder
  • Redesigned Bookmarks and History views
  • Site-specific zoom: Safari remembers and re-applies your zoom level to websites
  • Improved AutoFill from Contacts card
  • Reader improvements, including in-line sub-headlines, bylines, and publish dates
  • Legacy plug-ins are turned off by default in favor of HTML5 versions of websites
  • Allow reopening of recently closed tabs through the History menu, holding the "+" button in the tab bar, and using Shift-Command-T
  • When a link opens in a new tab, it is now possible to hit the back button or swipe to close it and go back to the original tab
  • Improved ranking of Frequently Visited Sites
  • Web Inspector Timelines Tab
  • Debugging using Web Inspector

Safari 10 also includes a number of security updates, including fixes for six WebKit vulnerabilities and issues related to Reader and Tabs.

No favicons. if you work with lots of tabs (most of us do) then safari is a grey sea of mess.

No bird view on other browsers.

Safari is Safari, Chrome is Chrome, they are different, and favicons looks ugly and distracting from the content.

One small but cool thing I found earlier is if a link opens in a new tab you can now swipe back on the trackpad (or click the back button) and Safari will close the tab and go back to the previous page (I assume that's new anyway!)

Well, I'm quite irritated at this so-called upgrade. In improving Auto-Fill from contacts cards (something I never did), it managed to wipe out the ability for Safari to remember text that was last typed into a certain kind of field on a page. I use a manuscript management system that contains form letters that I need to send out a couple times a day. I used to be able to start typing someone's e-mail address and the field would auto-populate with the last e-mail address that was in that field. Now? Nope. The only option I'm given is to choose someone from a contact card. Thanks, Safari.

** EDIT **
I went back in to this manuscript system after my mini-rant, and now Safari is filling in the information again. I have no idea...

Sweet, I found a terminal command to set minimum font size for Safari 10, I'm on Yosemite, but imagine it should work for El Capitan and Sierra

defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2MinimumFontSize -int 24

The 24 value at the end can be changed to any desired minimum font size preferred. I use a value of 17 and my Safari 10 page fonts look just like I had it in Safari 9. :)
